Every once in a while you get an opportunity to be apart of something so awesome. This past summer I was provided a chance to produce and assistant direct a music video for producer/artist, Johnny Voltik. As a writer and producer of all his music, Johnny Voltik’s sound is an eclectic mix of Andre 300, Busta Rhymes, Gnarles Barkley and Santigold. After years of anticipation, Johnny Voltik has re-invented himself and is the dawning of a new era in music and life. Breaking barriers and crossing genres, this video is amazing and I would like to dedicated it to you all. The message is beautiful and the quality is outstanding. I am proud to have been a part of its’ conception.

What happens to a dream deferred?

So, What really happens to a dream deferred? Langston Hughes posed the question and tried answering it in his 1951 poem, A Dream Deferred. Now nearly 60 years later I pose the same questions. In today’s tough times between The Global Economic Crisis, Famine, Cancer, War and Poverty, many have been forced to defer their dreams. The U.S. unemployment rate just dropped to 9% and economist predict and even lower drop in 2012. Many people are stuck at dead-end jobs or worse in an unemployment line. Though money is not everything we all need it to live and because of these tough times many people are struggling. For the new generation who are becoming adults in todays financial climate, many young adults have put their dreams on hold and with soaring tuition fees even higher education is becoming unaffordable for many. So, what happens to a dream deferred? What happens to a generation that will be riddled with debt, a slow housing market and a shaky economy? Do these times give this upcoming generation more fuel to reach for the stars or does it stifle their dreams and creativity? Langston Hughes was definitely on to something and I challenge all of us to ask ourselves this very question. We don’t have to accept reality, we in fact can change it. It all starts with a dream and the strength and courage to reach it. I have asked myself that question and the answer is one I will not let occur. For me my dreams are my life and deferring them is not an option. So whatever it is that the future may hold, make sure you make it happen.

Rethink Pink!

We are 25 days into National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global campaign coordinated by major breast cancer charities every October to raise funds and increase awareness of this disease. The pink ribbon is the international symbol for Breast Cancer. The color is considered feminine in Western Society and represent qualities of traditional feminine gender roles therefore, since Breast Cancer primarily affects women, pink is identified with Breast Cancer Awareness. However, when you think of women diseases many forgot about other diseases that are becoming much more common. Heart disease, Lung Cancer, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and Chronic Lower Respiratory disease, are all effecting women at high rates. Did you know that Colorectal Cancer is the second most common cancer among Asian/Pacific Islanders and Hispanic Women and the third leading cause of cancer deaths among women of all races? Lung Cancer causes more cancer deaths among women than Breast Cancer. There are many risk factors for these diseases like smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diet, obesity, excessive alcohol and physical inactivity. So for the rest of this month and beyond, when you think pink, consider all the risk factor and health concerns women face. Make sure you know where you stand health wise and continually educate yourself about prevention.

So all women and men, let everyday be awareness day!

4 Things…

It is a new day and a new work week so instead of voicing my habitual Monday complaints; I have decided to write the 4 things I am most grateful for. Gratitude lists in my opinion are quite cheesy. We all should just be grateful and you don’t have to write it down. However, writing is very powerful. Writing to me, can bring things to life and change one’s condition. So here are my 4 things.

1. Nature – The little things like a calm breeze, leaves changing color or a sidewalk shadow through the afternoon sunshine, warms my heart. Being a city person, I don’t get to really enjoy nature as much as I should. Therefore, the little bits of it are simply magical to me. I appreciate the crisp morning air, down to the shimmering stars in the nighttime sky. Nature is beauty.

2. Love – Yes, Love is the ultimate pleasure, pain and peace. There is nothing like love. I am so glad it’s in my life and in my heart. I was conceived from love and it is the very essence of who I am. A day without love, is no day at all.

3. Good Health- Yes, everyday I feel no physical pain or sickness, I am thankful for. Even when I do, I know it could always be worse. Good Health is a prize in today’s society and I am so grateful for every breath of life, I inhale and exhale.

4. Memories – Our memories are the closest thing we have to time travel. There is nothing like a good memory, that can spark up a laugh, a tear or a smile. My memories give me inspiration and everyday I get to wake up is a new chance to create them.

AHH, this post is quite refreshing. A wise man once said, when you are grateful fear disappears and abundance appears. So whether you decide to write it down or just think it, be grateful.

Cantaloupe & Lettuce Anyone?

Romaine Lettuce has been recalled in 21 states and reported illness in: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, as well as Canada. The Listeria outbreak has spread to cantaloupe and romaine lettuce, killing 21 people, and sickening 103 more. The CDC expects the numbers to continue to rise as symptoms can take up to two months to show up. Listeria is more deadly than Salmonella and E. Coli so do not take this recall lightly. The CDC says it is especially harmful to pregnant women because Listeria passes directly through the fetus. Symptoms are usually diarrhea, fever and muscle aches,Click Here to get more information on this rare yet deadly disease. Make sure to wash all raw produce under water throughly before eating. In addition, be sure that your refrigerator is at or below 40 degrees F and your freezer is at or below 0 degrees F by using a refrigerator thermometer.

The New Faces of Technology…

Yesterday Co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, died at 56. As the world reflects on the legacy and brilliance of Steve Jobs, the icon, I cannot help but wonder about the new faces of technology. At my young age I can remember the era of typewriters and floppy disk. I have had the awesome opportunity to witness and be apart of the amazing growth of technology. The mp3s, usbs, labtops, Adobes, iPhones, iMacs and iPads are huge jumps from the beginning days of computers. Steve Jobs revolutionized technology, so who’s up next? I can think back to the days when the first cell phone amazed me, I could not fathom a phone that was sleek, slim, plays music and runs applications. However, decades later here we are. So looking forward to the future, I can only imagine the next inventions. What shall the next Steve Jobs create? How do these new faces of technology look and do they even know what they will embark on? I’m sure a young Steve Jobs in the 1970s creating the Apple I and II had no idea how far he would go. The Common Cold

Yes, it is that time of year again. So grab your tissues and medications. Symptoms cough, sore throat, runny nose and nasal congestion. The culprit primarily the rhinovirus and coronavirus. Best protection against the common cold is washing your hands and staying away from infected people. The most common misconception is that antibacterial will save you but because the common cold is caused by a virus instead of bacterium, antibacterial soaps and products are no better than old-fashion soap and water. There is no medical cure for the common cold. Many use Vitamin C, Echinacea and other home remedies to help reduce symptoms. While others use over the counter medicine for relief. Either way it is that time of year. So wash your hands and protect yourself from, the cold.

Capital Punishment?

Capital Punishment also know as the death penalty or execution is an ancient practice that extends across the world. Here in the United States Capital punishment was a common law penalty practiced in early colonies. Fast-forwarding to today, many believe that the death penalty is “cruel and unusual punishment”, which the Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution prohibits. Others argue that the death penalty is morally wrong, applied arbitrarily and inconsistently. In addition, many believe that it is disproportionately used against ethnic, racial minorities, and the poor, who can not afford the expenses of legal counsel. In 2002, Ray Krone was exonerated from death row after spending 10 years in prison and 2 on death row. Ray Krone is the 100th person to be exonerated from death row in the United States since 1973, spending more than $100,000 in legal fees. However, not everyone is as fortunate.

This week’s U.S. execution of Troy Davis is making top news across the globe. A man who many believed was innocent was executed in the state of Georgia. This case has caught the attention of so many, from world figures to millions of protestors all over the world. So how do you feel? Do you all think we still need Capital punishment ? From 1972-1976 the death penalty was suspended in the U.S. and since then, as of 2009, 1,167 people have been executed. Cases like Ray Krone & Troy Davis raise many questions. How many innocent people are on death row? and Is the death penalty really needed here in the United States? The New York Times reported in 2009 that the State of California’s taxpayer pay nearly 114 million dollars a year on death row. Due to appeals, capital punishment is not always more cost-effective than imprisonment for life. So if it isn’t less expensive, arguable inhumane, and many are wrongfully convicted, why still practice Capital Punishment? According to Amnesty International, in 2010, 23 countries carried out executions across the world; People’s Republic of China taking the No. 1 spot followed by Iran, North Korea, Yemen and the U.S.

One thing I can never support is injustice and when innocent men and women get executed it is a form of injustice. Ray Krone said, “I would not trust the state to execute a person for committing a crime against another person, I know how the system works. I know what prison is like, I know what the judges are like, and I know what the prosecutors are like. It’s not about justice or fairness or equality. It’s absolutely wrong. Any chance I can, whether I start with one or two people or a whole auditorium filled with people, I’ll tell them what happened to me. Because if it happened to me, it can happen to anyone.” Very poignant words from one of the few people free off death row. Troy Davis may be gone but he leaves behind a legacy of a cause that millions across the entire world are fighting for.

Do you trust your politicians?

The Presidential Election season is heating up and local elections are in full swing. So do you trust your politician? Across the country Americans are voting for politicians that make promises of brighter days and much-needed changes. But because you vote for a particular candidate, doesn’t necessarily mean you trust who you’re voting for.. or does it? Look at Obama for example, in 2008 his entire campaign was centered around change. “Yes We Can” echoed out across the nation and after 8 years of George W. Bush, change is just what we needed. Now almost 4 years later, Obama has changed many things, however his approval rating is at an all time low. Is it because voters truly believed in 4 years he could create a ton of new jobs, turn the economy around and stop the war? Now that those promises have not quite been fulfilled, many voters don’t approve of the 44th president of the United States of America.

See for me voting for any politician is a lot like picking out a car. Some are bad for the environment, some are not, some are made for families, some are made for singles, some are made for the rich, and some for the poor; however we need them and choosing the right one that fits my needs is key. They’re not perfect, in fact far from it. Just like cars they need maintenance, they sometimes breakdown and often don’t live up to their glory, but do you trust them? Trust in many cases has to be earned and my advice to voters is to let their politician earn their trust. Don’t expect miracles either, because as citizens our work is not done once we leave the voting booth. It is still our job to make a difference for what we believe in any way possible; whether its writing a letter to your local congressman, signing a petition, organizing a rally or joining an organization. The victory doesn’t come once your politician is sworn in. There are many battles to be fought on so many grounds, that is just the nature of politics. So this election season, ask yourself.. Do you trust your politicians? & Do you trust yourself to stand up for whatever it is you believe in? Know the issues, know their platforms and make your voice heard in whatever way you can.

O’ Africa…

Yesterday in Abuja, Nigeria, the headquarter of the United Nations was bombed and at least 18 people were killed. That same day in Northern Nigeria,12 people had been killed in two banks and two police stations attacks. Local officials suspect radical islamist sec Boko Haram.

In Algeria, yesterday another suicide car bombing killed 18 people on a military Academy in the town of Cherchell. This attack come 12 days after a police station was bombed and 29 people were wounded which was claimed by Al- Qaeda.

In Libya, in the mist of their conflict they now face a severe shortage of water and medicine.

East Africa is still battling its worst drought in 60 years affecting over 12 million people. Somalia has been hit the hardest with most of the country under Rebel Islamist’s control and suffering from famine forcing people to flee to near by countries.

This is just a fraction of the issues and conflicts Africa as a continent faces. Nations gripped by poverty, starvation, disease, lack of aid, corrupted leaders and violent rebels, everyday live out these harsh realities.

O’ Africa how l love you. Famine, war, rebels, greed and violence shall not keep you down!!!
